Business Is Business…

There’s been a lot in the news this week about supermarkets ‘faking’ special deals by hyper-inflating prices of products several days before they are offered at special discounts or incorporated into special offers.

I haven’t heard the word yet but surely this is nothing more than fraud.

Falsifying discounts is effectively, at best, cheating customers and, at its very worse, defrauding them.

I’m astonished by the PR bat-backs when confronted. Ocado’s press release sounded like it was actually dismayed that this could have possibly happened, and promised to have an internal investigation.

I’m often told ‘business is business’ and that little phrase is an excuse-all for basically acting without honour. The bottom line is doing business with honour is the only way to do business.

In the publishing business it’s quite common for publishers to print a lot less than they actually claim. I think that’s deplorable – but it goes on.

If you’re going to disrespect your customers, don’t be surprised if, somewhere down the line, your customers go elsewhere. Bottom line (there’s a pun here if you look for it), the big supermarkets had better shape up before their customers start shipping out.
