Wales Marketing Awards Winner

Former University of Wales Press deputy director, Richard Houdmont, whose publishing career spans more than three decades, was recognised by another of Wales’ professional industries this month as he was given the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award at the The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards.

The coveted accolade is awarded to individuals who have added significant worth to the Welsh marketing sector over the course of their career, whether through personal achievement or commitment to the advancement of the industry.

Welsh-speaking Mr Houdmont began his career in publishing in 1975 at IBIS (International Book Information Services) in Neasden. He then moved to the University of Wales Press where he rose to Deputy Director. In 2006 he joined the Board of Poetry Wales Press (publishing under the Seren imprint) and has been Chair of the Board since 2007. In his ‘spare time’ he has also published six Welsh-language books for children under the Houdmont imprint. More recently he worked for CIM as their Network Manager for Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man. He is currently serving as a Trustee of The National Library of Wales.

A standing ovation ensued as professionals from within the Welsh marketing industry celebrated Mr Houdmont’s achievements during the glittering ceremony, held at Cardiff City Stadium. Richard said, “I was delighted to receive the CIM Wales Board’s ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award at the 2015 Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards. Having worked behind the scenes at all the previous Canmol events it felt strange to go onto the stage as a recipient, and I was greatly humbled by the standing ovation I received.

“Professor Jonathan Deacon’s introduction was, as ever, very generous indeed. I am indebted to him and the very many volunteers, organisations and businesses with whom I have worked in Wales and also, more recently, in Ireland and the Isle of Man.”

Joining Richard in his Canmol success were seven other marketing teams from a mix of public sector organisations, renowned Welsh brands and SMEs.

A panel of 11 business and marketing experts were responsible for selecting the winners under the Chairmanship of Professor Jonathan Deacon, South Wales Business School, University of South Wales and Deputy Chair of CIM.

Professor Deacon said, “The Canmol awards are designed to celebrate the outstanding business results that have been achieved over the past year through innovative and creative marketing. The strength of this year’s winning campaigns demonstrates to me the wealth of marketing talent working within the sector in Wales today, a prospect that is hugely exciting for the future development of our industry. I’d like to congratulate all the winners and encourage them to continue working hard to set the benchmark for marketers across the country.”
